Student education

I was trained as an interior architect but also an educator, and through my working experiences as a retail designer have often had to mentor colleagues. However, it is as part of my PhD journey that I truly discovered my passion and skills for teaching.

For the past seven years I have had the immense pleasure to guide international students from diverse disciplines such as interior architecture, architecture, marketing, business management, fashion, graphic, product and exhibition design. At times, these were mixed to offer more realistic working scenarios.

The teaching formats I have managed have also greatly varied: from 2hr long online lessons, 2-3 day in-person guest lectures, week long summer school programs, ad hoc thesis supervision, all the way to full academic year courses. As you may imagine, this has led me to address a wide range of topics, approached through different “lenses” and in varying depths.

If you are currently considering enriching your students’ expertise with retail design education, I am confident that I could draft and deliver the best suited educational material for you and them.

Coaching for entrepreneurs & sector collaborators

Physical retail spaces offer a unique way for customers to connect with brands. To this day, they remain the only touchpoint in the marketing mix which allows customers to experience a brand’s universe in a 360 sensory manner. This means that retail design undeniably impacts the success of developing brands, but also of larger scale shopping destinations such as malls, outlets and city centres.

As a sector organisation that aims to support retail entrepreneurship and growth, you have likely witnessed this power first hand. You also probably know that few are the opportunities to access retail design education and coaching.

If this is something you wish to develop for your collaborators, be they your own staff, young entrepreneurs you support, public administration partners or other retail sector players, please get in touch. Together, let’s develop a coaching program that will lead your audience to deliver the most successful, society-focused, retail future we are all dreaming of.

Retailer & design team training

The retail sector is in constant evolution. Brands need to continuously stay on top of market and societal shifts to remain relevant and deliver to new customer expectations. However, it isn’t always easy for those active in the field to follow these changes, and consider the impact they may have on their practices.

This is also true for retail designers, be they in-house or external consultants. Often their teams have set ways of working that ensure the most efficient project deliveries. Still, to align with the aforementioned shifts, it is important to periodically reflect on these ways of working and question if they are still delivering the best results. This is where a “refresher” or “specialty” course can prove useful.

Whether you are looking to train new employees, refresh your current staff’s skills’ set or add a new one to your offer, I would be happy to discuss how ce could provide training to support your team in staying on top, even ahead, of the game.

Retail Design books and Elisa Servais' PhD thesis on a shelf with her glasses and a mug

I had the pleasure of being mentored by Elisa Servais during my last year in University. She guided me through the writing of my master’s thesis with her passion for Retail Design and professionalism. She pushed me to expand my skills and always was there for me if I had any questions or needed some advice. In the beginning of the school year I never thought I could even write a thesis, but at the end it did seem possible, but that couldn’t have been without her help. Thank you Elisa!

Aura Vanbuel
Interior Architecture student at Hasselt University

I met Elisa during her work for the University of Hasselt, where she developed a Design Support Tool for her PhD, which we applied in a workshop for Decathlon. She has strong analytical skills. I truly appreciated her progressive approach. Interior design can be a powerful amplifier for a retailer’s business model, and Elisa demonstrated her ability to identify key elements that create economic value.

Mathias De Cock
Technical manager/ Project designer team – Real Estate & Business Development, Decathlon Belgium

I had the pleasure of being taught by Elisa in a captivating course about retail design. Through her expertise, I gained valuable insights that have greatly benefited me in my professional practice. Her classes were always very interactive. Elisa has a remarkable ability to illustrate theoretical concepts through real-world case studies and examples. I highly recommend her as a knowledgeable and engaging educator.

Haya Arafa
Architecture & interior architecture student at Hasselt University & Politecnico di Milano

Elisa has a multitude of strengths, professionally and personally. She has exceptional technical skills combined with excellent creativity. When I worked with her it was across the spectrum of the positions she was in. She is a very approachable person with skills to give her a good personality to teach and mentor.
